How does coaching vary compared to Mentoring or Therapy?
The ICG definition of coaching is :
“The International Coaching Guild (ICG) defines coaching as a collaborative relationship between a coach and a coaching client, with the primary purpose of facilitating a client’s progress towards their goals. This is typically a solution focused and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of general life experience, personal growth and self-directed learning.”
Coaching is distinct from therapy and mentoring:
-
Therapists or counsellors typically explore the past to address and resolve present conditions or trauma.
-
Mentors are experts in a specific field who guide others by sharing their knowledge and giving direct advice or instruction — think of them as a teacher.
-
A coach is a guide, not a teacher. A coach doesn’t provide answers, nor is expertise in a specific field always required. Instead, a coach is trained in the art of asking powerful, intuitive questions to help clients uncover their own solutions and move toward meaningful, aligned goals. We understand thinking styles and behavioural patterns. A coaches role can be (one or all ) as a facilitator, challenger, provoker, mis-matcher, reflector, collaborator, inspirer and champion.
-
If a client needs specialist assistance outside our services, we are required to refer them as necessary to best serve our clients.
-
We work with clients in both personal and professional contexts. Our clients are often people who feel blocked, burnt out, uncertain, disconnected or are simply ready for more. They’ve reached a point where they’re no longer willing to stay stuck — and they’re ready to become a more empowered version of themselves.
What is the full Meta Dynamics™ Profiling Tool and why is it such an incredible analysis tool for discovering thinking patterns?
As every person thinks differently- it’s important to understand this as a starting point. The Meta Dynamics™ Profiling Tool is a unique, evidence-based, fully objective personality and behavioural profiling tool that focuses on thinking styles. It is an Ipsative test which compares the specific traits and thinking styles of the individual, as opposed to comparing against the general population. The Meta Dynamics™ Profiling Tool is based upon the most researched and well-known normative tests ever produced- the Big Five Personality Model , Critical Alignment Model and also integrates elements of E-DISC, providing a robust framework for understanding human behaviour and performance. This tool has been designed specifically to support coaching , giving clients a directed pathway forward - not just a psychological diagnosis.
Why is this tool so valuable for our clients?
Your thinking style is both a competence and a skill — meaning it can be developed and improved over time through intentional focus and practice.
The insights from the Meta Dynamics™ Profiling Tool help you:
-
Discover your strengths and development areas
-
Improve emotional intelligence and decision-making
-
Improve behavioural flexibility and choice
-
Align your actions with your goals in a range of life domains
-
Enhance leadership effectiveness and interpersonal dynamics
-
The tool quickly identifies your over and under functioning traits, speeding up the commencement of targeted coaching of the areas that need work.
-
By repeating The Meta Dynamics™ Profiling Tool every 6-12 months, changes made during this time can be assessed objectively and updated coaching plans can be developed to suit the clients new requirements.
How is it used in coaching and recruitment?
-
We recommend completing the full profiling tool at the beginning of your coaching journey to provide a clear foundation for growth. A follow-up profile is often conducted after a set period to measure progress and track development. We recommend redoing the questionnaire each year so that your coaching programme can be modified to suit your changing requirements as you grow.
-
In recruitment, the tool is a powerful addition to objectively assess a candidate’s suitability — both for a specific role and their fit within the wider team and organisational culture.
What are the different versions of the Meta Dynamics™ Profiling Tool?
To give you a powerful insight into The Meta Dynamics™ Profiling tool, we offer a free
32-question research-based questionnaire to discover your dominant personality and thinking style. The mini tool is an excerpt of the Full Meta Dynamics™ Profiling tool.
1. Meta Dynamics™ Mini-Tool (Free): Overview- One archetype
-
32 questions / 64 items
-
Provides an introductory insight into your primary thinking style and how this may influence your behaviour and personality across different areas of life — including work, relationships, health, and more.
-
The results are indicative only and may vary from the full tool as the mini tool only focusses on one thinking style- not all four. The full tool uses a much more detailed questionnaire for a more comprehensive result. We recommend that the full tool is undertaken on an annual basis so growth areas can be cross referenced as you grow.
